Yes, developed. Yes, an affinity. I swear, I used to be a sick-once-a-year kind of girl, but no longer. Now, if there are germs within a 50 mile radius {dramatic} of me, my body pulls them to me like a vacuum. A really unpleasant, obnoxious vacuum.

In my post Random Musings of a Sick Girl I explained that... sick feeling. When your brain just isn't quite firing on all cylinders, and there is nothing much that you can do about it. That feeling has been my life for the past few days, but finally took me down with a knock-out punch yesterday when I was confined to my bed and couch for the day, forcing PG to deal with Sick Sarah. Poor guy.

So, being not fully recovered as of yet, I thought that today would be the perfect time for a good-ol' volume two of some sickly random musings.

Ready? Me too.

Again? Really?
Why is it so incredibly bright outside the one day I don't feel well? Boo.
Is there some form of Best Girlfriend of the Year Award I could win for surprising PG with Penguins home opener tickets?
Would I have been taken out of the running for it because of my sub-par performance yesterday?
I have a lot to do today. I wonder how much of it will get done...
Is Penguin a weird word?
Why is it so hard to read when you're sick?
The high is 18 degrees today... don't really know what to say about that.
I wish I could wear my UGGs all day.
Did I leave the iron on this morning?
Did I get sick because I just bought new running shoes for a great deal and my body is making me pay for my awesome deal-finding skills?

C'est tout (that's all).

But with an insane work week in progress, I have had little time to do anything other than work, and dream about work.

This weekend, however, was so fabulous that I just had to carve out a space on my blog to talk about it. Why so fabulous, you ask?

1. Weather
It was in the 60's (yes, 60's) all weekend, and I was in utter shock. While I'm fairly certain that the mild weekend weather has made today's snowy miserableness even worse, it was absolutely worth it to ditch the winter jacket for a few days and spend some time outside. We had the windows open. We drove with the windows down. We spent hours in the mild glory. Now, in July we'll get a freak weekend where 60-degree weather will feel sweatshirt-worthy, but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

2. Outdoor Activities
See #1. If you had weather anywhere near what we had in The Pitts and you shacked up inside all weekend, then shame on you! From the minute we saw the mild weather make its way onto the 10-day forecast, we were planning endless activities that we could do in order to take full advantage of our good fortune. What did we settle on?

The Strip District

There is no better place to go when you just want to be outside in Pittsburgh than the Strip District. Honestly. If you're hungry, in the mood to people watch, shopping, or just craving a good walk, this is the place to go. We snagged a few sandwiches at a Pittsburgh-tastic deli (see Eats and Treats for a new addition coming soon), and then spent a few hours (yes, hours) weaving in and out of the plethora of stores along the main drag. And we weren't the only ones. People were out in hoards (great word) to pretend it was Spring along with us. We saw everything from summer dresses to jorts to parkas, ate lots, and spent a little too much money - it was a great day.

3. Football
Alright, cover your eyes Pittsburghers, because this could be <strike>mildly</strike> extremely painful for you...

With a decisive win over the Houston Texans Sunday night, my beloved New England Patriots have advanced to face the Baltimore Ravens (booo) this Sunday in the AFC Conference Championship.

OK, so let me plead my case to the people of The Pitts here: I understand that the Steelers didn't make the playoffs. I understand that they lost to the Bengals to seal their fate. And I understand that you dislike Tom Brady (or Tim, as PG calls him) and the Pats... but come on, you know you hate the Ravens. It's the lesser of two evils here, people. Anywho, needless to say this completed a fabulous weekend, and PG even pretended to be happy as well. Weekend made. Bring it on, Baltimore!

Hope you all are having wonderful hump days!

He is currently in first place (whoopwhoop), leading Matt Kemp (LA), CC Sabathia (NYY), Bryce Harper (NAT), Buster Posey (SF), Ryan Braun (MIL), and Miguel Cabrera (DET).

I'll keep this short and sweet. Here are five reasons you should vote for him:

The hair. Done and done.

Despite all of the ups and downs (lots of downs) that playing in Pittsburgh has brought over the past oh, I don't know, 20 years, McCutchen truly loves playing in this city, and is loyal to his fans.

He's one of the most engaged professional athletes on social media that I have ever encountered, and is even hosting Fan Appreciation Days today and tomorrow for those who have been voting for him. (Check him out at @TheCUTCH22)

Ever been to a Pirates game? He is a blast to watch. A total game changer, and adds an energy to the lineup that is absolutely contageous.

I love the number 22. Just do.

So there are my five reasons. But what are you still doing here? Go to mlb.com/covervote to vote for him NOW! Then head to Twitter, and vote again using the hashtag #MLB13Cutch.

Happy voting!

Nope. It's DIT today, people. And by DIT, I mean Do It Together. While I can be a control freak about projects as a whole, when it comes to matters of the kitchen, I am happy to relinquish some responsibility.

Plus, it's fun.

There is no better way to save money when co-habitating then to cook as many meals as possible. Dinner for two every night at a restaurant? Major cha-ching. So with budgets in mind, we've decided to forego the lazy ways of old, and actually plan out our meals. We've even made it a bit of a challenge - pour through my cookbooks to find worthy recipes, and then give them a shot! See who can find the best recipe, who is the most efficient grocery shopper, who prepares the best meal... it's like Top Chef for the cooking-challenged.

Thus far, we've been pretty good about alternating whose night it is to cook, but after working all day I've found that the time spent cooking alone is valuable time together that goes to waste. So we've arrived at DIT.

DIT Challenge #1: Homemade Beef and Broccoli {in the slow cooker}
Recipe by Betty Crocker, amended by SJ

Ingredients

1 pound beef boneless top round steak, trimmed and cut into 1-inch cubes

1 medium onion, cut into wedges

1/2 cup condensed beef broth

4 tablespoons teriyaki baste and glaze

1 tablespoon sesame seed

1 teaspoon dark sesame oil {not necessary}

2/3 cup uncooked regular long-grain rice {white or brown}

1 1/3 cups water

2 tablespoons waster

1 tablespoon cornstarch

2 cups frozen broccoli florets

Recipe

Mix beef, onion, broth, teriyaki baste, sesame seed and sesame oil into a 3 1/2 - 4 quart slow cooker.

Cover and cook on low heat setting for 8 to 10 hours.

35 minutes prior to serving, cook rice in 1 1/3 cups of water, or in accordance with package directions.

While rice is cooking, mix broccoli with 1 tablespoon of cornstarch and 2 tablespoons of water in small bowl. Add to beef mixture in slow cooker, re-cover, and cook on low for 30 minutes, or until broccoli is the desired texture.

So, why did we pick beef and broccoli for our first DIT challenge? To put it simply, we are obsessed with Asian food. Sushi, Thai, Chinese, Japanese, cold, hot, hibachi, frozen in a bag - anything. Unfortunately, with this obsession comes unfortunate wallet and waistline side effects, so, as part of our New Year pledges we decided to try this to safeguard both! The ingredients cost a total of about $15-$20 depending on what you already have in your fridge, and one serving is a mere 335 calories. Perf.

The prep time was legitimately 20 minutes max, but we thoroughly enjoyed playing with knives and yummy ingredients together... and the ease of the recipe.

It's in the slow cooker now, and I will be sure to follow up with photos later this evening. Thanks to Betty Crocker for supplying us with our first challenge!

Between the random, borderline-inappropriate comments, to the spontaneous crying, to my oftentimes-uncontrollable laughter, I am just way, way too much fun. Bottom line, it takes a lot to shock him these days. Which is why he was less than surprised when this little scene went down...

Me: "I'm going to be a vegetarian for the month of February."
PG: "Ok."
Me: "That's it?"
PG: "As long as you don't expect me to do it with you then yep, that's it!"

Needless to say, my craving for drama was not satisfied by his ultimately-supportive acceptance of yet another one of my little life challenges.

I'm going to grow out my hair.

I'm going to try to work out every Saturday and Sunday.

I'm only going to eat white meat and fish.

Inevitably turns into...

Long hair is a pain in my rear. I'm chopping it.

I'm so tired! I don't want to workout every day, I need a break! *cue tears*

Can I have a bite of your cheeseburger?

But this time, I'm going to do it! Why February? Well, what else happens in February? Nothing. No vacations, no big events, nada. Which also means zilch in terms of motivation to get my act together.

But then comes March - a benefit dinner with my family, a vacation that will most likely require me to wear a bathing suit, birthdays, and the like. Then, pretty soon it's warm weather yet again, we have about a million weddings this year, and are planning a vacation of our own in October. Oh, and I'm running on a relay team for the Pittsburgh Marathon. There's that too.

Essentially, February is the lead in to a crazy, photo, running and bathing suit-filled year. And I need to get a jumpstart on it. Is part of this a personal test? Absolutely. I love to challenge and bother myself. But it is also a way to make sure that I am starting off the year in a great way, and feeling fabulous heading into my big March.

It is also going to be a cooking challenge of sorts. As PG and I are working on learning how to cook, being a vegetarian for a month will force us out of our meat-centric cooking habits, and into a realm of veggies, tofu and all sorts of deliciousness. And by us, I mean me (see above).

So I'm doing it.

I solemnly swear that I will be a vegetarian for the month of February, and will keep you all posted as I struggle along this untraveled (by me) path.

Though I'm not married, let's be real, a lot of the daily struggles of a cohabitating couple are absolutely relatable to the newlyweds of the world. So, Kaitlyn graciously invited me to contribute a post about lessons I have learned thus far.

Funny story - I haven't learned anything.

Only kidding!

And I was pleased to see that her readers not only enjoyed the post, but totally felt my pain {and joy} over "manning up" a once-feminine apartment.
It is so cliche, but so very true. I started this blog back in August (warm summer days, sigh) as a way of adjusting to my surroundings. PG was about to head back to school, and I quickly realized that I knew relatively little about my new abode. It was time to make this city my own, and blogging became a way to hold myself accountable to this goal.

What started out as a diary that spared me the discomfort of hand cramps, quickly blossomed into something much, much more than I had anticipated. I've made friends, I've tried things, I've wandered out into the depths of the blogging world, and I have shared a piece of myself with a community that I never imagined existed.

Now, five months later, in the depths of winter (I'm currently typing this with my UGGs firmly on my frozen toots) and at the start of a new year, I've decided to take some time to reflect on what I've learned from my adventures in blogging.

In the vast world of the interweb, you are not alone. I've spent hours searching and searching for one little thing that I can't seem to find, and all I want to do is press a Help button. Isn't there someone out there? Anyone. The answer is yes. Blogging has put a human spin on my experiences online as Facebook quickly begins to feel more distant and impersonal.

You do, in fact, have things to talk about. The most daunting thing about starting a blog is the lingering notion in the back of your pretty little head that there is no possible way you could have something to talk about every day. Even a few days a week. But you do. When I was sick, I literally wrote down the first 12 things that came to my mind. And you know what? I enjoyed it. Sometimes the challenge of coming up with what to write is the very best part of blogging.

You can take days off. My great fear aside from having nothing to write was that if I didn't post something every single day that I would be ruined. Blog over. But that is simply not the case. My readers (and yours too, surely) come to hear what you have to say. And when you have nothing to say they don't abandon you, rather, they assume you're off on a wonderful adventure and they can't wait to hear all about it.

You're just as ____ as you think you are. If you think your post was funny, it was funny. If you wanted to touch the hearts of your readers, you did. Blogging is about you. It's your outlet. So no matter what the comments may say, it is your perspective that matters most.

It's perfectly fine to be yourself, no matter what you may think. In the past few weeks I have read a variety of blogs that have outraged me, disgusted me, and made me simply shake my head. "How can this be on the internet," I wonder to myself. Well, for the same reason that I'm allowed to log on every day and type away - because we have the right to speak freely in this great country. While I am a full proponent of there being limitations, I am also glad that we are able to have this wonderful space that we can fill with our ideas, that inspires discourse, and that allows us to share ourselves with the world. This freedom is protected every day by our Armed Forces, and I intend to utilize it to the best of my ability.

It's been a great first few months, and I can't wait to see what lies ahead!

What have you learned from blogging?

Great, now that that's over, please keep reading.

While eating a little {healthy} dinner last night, I received a call from LA - one of my wonderful friends that I sadly had to leave behind in Cincinnati when I made the leap to The Pitts. Tear.

I can always count on her to have fabulous stories, and to thoroughly appreciate any and all of mine, so I pushed the veggies aside and answered away. Conversation went as follows:

SJ: "Blah blah blah, I'm hilarious, blah blah blah."
LA: "Blah blah blah, hahaha, blah blah blah... oh, and will you be a bridesmaid in my wedding?"

WHAT?

Cue tears and excitement and joy... it was like New Years Eve all over again, but without the cocktails. Needless to say I was (and am) thrilled, and am already counting down the days until the bachelorette party.. oh, and the wedding of course!

I wanted to write a little something explaining our friendship, what she has meant to me since we met practically two years ago, and how excited I am to share her special day...

...But I figured that this would be more fitting.
Yes, I am still alive, and yes, I still plan on blogging in 2013 - so please don't take my prolonged absence as a sign of an unfortunate present-opening accident or a New Years Resolution to no longer blog.

HA!

No, no - I've been running around doing a million and one things, and sometimes nothing at all, but all of it was part of a prolonged period of quiet time. No, I certainly wasn't always quiet (really??), but it was more of an inner quiet that I was oh-so desperately in need of. No stress, no deadlines, no hustle-and-bustle other than my nightmarish travel experiences and overdose of shopping. Quiet time.

Quiet time also meant unplugging for a little bit - going as far off the grid as I realistically will ever go. I rarely was on my phone, my laptop is in the same place that it has been since last week, hell, I don't even know where 3 of my 4 phone chargers are right now. But it was nice, oh so nice.

What did I do? Let me break it down...

Eat, eat, and eat some more. Guess who can seriously put away food? This girl. Yep, I've still got it despite years of watching what I eat. But, unlike previous years, I am in no way remorseful. I ate well, but rarely over-indulged, and found a strange peace in just letting go of the calorie-counting for a brief moment in time.

Exerci.... Ok, I did do some of this, but not enough that I should even give it a bullet point. Sorry I'm not sorry.

I rediscovered the beauty of sleeping til noon. I didn't think I had it in me - the latest I have slept in recent memory was about 10:30a after a particularly brutal night - but I did it. Three times! And why not? No children, no pets, no work meant see you in the afternoon for me!

Spent some much-needed time with family and friends. Weekends just aren't enough sometimes, so the holidays always provide the chance to spend some quality time with the ones I love.

Ran in airports. And I mean ran. If you were lucky enough to see me haul across the Houston and/or Atlanta airport in my UGGs (woof) like a bat out of hell, well, you're welcome for the laugh. Don't worry, I only went 1-for-2, so 50% of the time it was all for naught.

Quality time with the roommate. After a particularly brutal, but great weekend with one of PG's best friends, we were down for the count come this past Sunday. The cure? Alternating between sleep and zombie states for a solid 12 hours on the new couch. Not only did we re-energize, but we got to spend some quality one-on-one time together, which will get increasingly rare as work picks up.

Ran into walls. Laugh away, but this was seriously a vacation filled with bumping into things. Maybe it was because I was partially asleep more often than not, or maybe it was because I love Christmas wine. Who knows. But it happened, so there it is.

Did some apartment redecoration. Hooray! We got new slip covers for our old couch, added an ottoman with serious loungability, got another end table, and did little things here and there. Washed down with a massive dinner at PF Changs thanks to a lovely gift from my parents.

Ok, that's it for now. You get the gist. I did a lot - a lot of something, and a lot of nothing. I even managed to get sick and survive a snowstorm. But the moral of the story is that it was a wonderful vacation, and I can't wait to see what 2013 has in store!

How did you spend your holidays? I'd love to hear!
From an early age, having moved several times, I realized that home wasn't a physical location (ok, well not entirely a physical location) - it was where my family was. Where I felt the most loved, and the place where I could most be myself.

Even in college, the word "home" started to evolve as I found my place at school, and in my fabulous sorority. Now I had two families - my Zeta family, and my real family. But wait, then came the amazingly close friendships I formed with several people during my time at MU - so close, that I began to consider them a part of my family. Slowly home evolved into the groups with which I felt truly in my element, as I did with my own family.

Now that I'm out in the real world, I don't go home every day to my parents, or to the same friends from high school and college that I still identify as parts of who I am - I come home to PG and our little one-bedroom apartment. Now that's home. We have a couch that we hate, cooking skills that seriously need improving, and a mound of things to sort through and find places for... and it is absolutely perfect.

Pondering this idea of "home" earlier (as I watch the white death creep into PA), I realized that having multiple homes shouldn't be confusing, rather, it's a blessing. I'm lucky enough to have places and people across the country that I can go home too. Whether it is my apartment in the Pitts, my parent's house in Kansas, or with friends in a variety of locations, I am never far from home.

A few of the many "homes" that will be on my mind this Holiday Season - set to the tune of "Home" by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros.
Welcome to my life, at present. My typically-coherent mind is, instead, currently filled with random phrases and streams of words that usually mesh, but just aren't coming together at present. Sigh.

So, I decided that today, I wouldn't push myself. Wouldn't think too hard about this post - I do have to get some things accomplished at work today, after all.

Enjoy my stream of consciousness..

Why don't I feel well? So not a fan.

Instagram - really?! If you sell pictures of my precious puppy or semi-pathetic DIY crafts without my consent, I will destroy you.

How do I get a grumpy pet? If Grumpy Cat has taught me one thing, it's that sour-hearted pets can be especially lucrative.

No matter how little you've eaten in the past day or two, a large lunch at work is a horrific idea. Unless you are permitted a mid-work nap. In which case, where is this heaven that you work?

Why is the ice and water machine so far away?

Am I REALLY done with my Christmas shopping? If so, why do I keep adding things to virtual carts every two seconds?

I have the TV to myself tonight for a solid few hours. What do I watch first? Glee? Nashville? Cue confusion.

What are the odds that I can get PG to come 30 minutes home, make me dinner, rub my back, and listen to me cough and complain, then drive 30 minutes back out for guys night?

Why do I morph into Grumpy Cat when I don't feel well? Smile, dangit!

Facebook - you addicting, addicting fiend, you.

What's on my to-do list?.... Nope, not doing any of that.

I NEED MY SWEATPANTS

Since the tragic slaying of 20 children and six teachers in Newtown, Connecticut, I have heard that phrase in a variety of settings, all equally challenging.

What do you say?... To the loved ones of those who lost their lives.
What do you say?... To a grieving town.
What do you say?... To a nation left stunned in the wake of yet another act of mass murder.
What do you say?... To parents who have to send their kids off to school this week.
What do you say?... To teachers who have to face their kids in a place that they used to see as a safe-haven.
What do you say?... To politicians when the issue of gun control is brought into the spotlight yet again.

And what I have found after a few days of reflection is this - there are no words.

There is no explanation, no rhyme or reason, no wisdom that can mend a nation of broken hearts. Try as we may, our words, no matter how well-crafted or thoughtful, can only fall short of bringing back the lives that were lost on Friday.

But that doesn't mean that words can't be found, or that they are powerless in a time of crisis.

Political views aside, watching President Obama address a grieving town, reading the names one by one, his face riddled with emotion, made a statement - he's only human. He's a father too. He is grieving alongside those who put him into office. He left all that is going on in DC to offer what comfort he could. His words made a difference.

Thousands of letters have been sent to Newtown. Outside of the U.S., the world is grieving with us, and memorials are popping up across the globe. They cry for us, and speak of their own experiences of tragedy, explaining how they grew from loss. Their words make a difference.

In the shadow of tragedy, the NFL maintained its regularly-scheduled games on Sunday, with each team and player making their own statement about what occurred. Perhaps the most moving of these tributes was that of Victor Cruz, who called the family of a young victim and unwavering fan, Jack Pinto, to offer his condolences, and to show them that no one is unaffected by this loss. His words made a difference.

And now here I am - a daughter, a sister, a girlfriend, a granddaughter, an American, a blogger, a human being - and I must ask myself, what do I say?

I say I'm sorry. I say I'm devastated. I say that I wish the tears I've shed over this tragedy since it occurred could, in any way, ease your pain. I say that I, too, am left questioning this society in which I live.

But I also say that there is hope. I say that we have a responsibility as human beings, and as citizens of this country to act. To do something, anything that will prevent this senseless act from happening again. I say that we must protect our children. I say that I believe they are in a better place. And I say that I am with you, Newtown.

In a time when they are hard to find, there are words.

Watching football, checking my Fantasy Football lineup, and watching more football. And that's a wrap. So when I was invited to check out the new Sports Lounge at Dave and Busters at The Waterfront, I was all over it!

The last time I was at D&B was for our corporate outing a few months ago, and the facility was undergoing some serious construction. Having been to my fair share of D&B locations (Chicago, Cincinnati, etc.), I had developed a general idea of what to expect during a standard outing - old-fashioned dining room, plenty of children, and games.. lots of games. So when I found out that the renovations revolved around the creation of a sports bar, I was intrigued, to say the least.

And let me just say, when you walk in to the front door of the new-and-improved Dave & Busters, feel free to leave any preconceived notions at the door. I almost did a serious double-take - am I in the wrong place?? You're immediately greeted by an enormous TV screen and trendy-looking reception area, and it is instantly clear that they weren't just renovating - they were out to change their brand.

Whoa, where am I??

So let me break it down for you...

DECOR. Don't get me wrong, the old dining room reminiscent of Cheers is still fully intact, as are some of the older sections of the facility that feature games such as billiards and shuffle board. While D&B wanted to change their image, they wanted to make sure that they lost zero existing clientele in the process. Kudos.

The renovations focused primarily on the creation of an upscale-looking bar, along with a massive sports lounge...

On a raised platform just past the hostess desk is a raised bar and sitting area. Complete with white leather chairs and bright lighting, it's like a mini, trendy urban bar at the heart of The Waterfront. While the manager pointed out that this area draws lots of women (bright lights and pretty bottles ooooh), the Beer Tubes and big screens keep the men coming in droves.

Right across the football field-themed hall is the expansive sports lounge. I don't think that our group spoke for a solid 10 minutes after first being seated at our high-top booth because we were too busy trying to see what was happening on ALL of the TVs. And there were loads of them. Gone are the crunchy plastic booths, having been replaced by over-sized (and super comfortable) leather booths and chairs. And don't worry, I'm pretty sure there isn't a bad seat in the house, especially on Sundays! While the atmosphere was still family-friendly, I felt like I was out at a bar, as opposed to Chuck E. Cheese. Thankfully.

Moving back through the lounge you arrive in a room boasting plenty more TVs, plus leather couches, chairs, and party space - complete with free Wi Fi. The Pittsburgh-themed decor makes you feel like you're in a typical Pitts bar, as opposed to a chain restaurant, and the lounge feel is super inviting. I can absolutely see myself grabbing a drink and watching a game back there, and am planning on it!

FOOD. Standard bar food, for shame! The massive menu features any, and everything you could possibly want - whether you are out with the family, or catching a game with some friends.

Cue drool

How do you decide what to get when you're staring blankly at a menu, with no idea where to begin? Ask the waitress, of course! It's a good thing she was friendly and super knowledgeable, because a less patient person would have had a difficult time dealing with our indecisive table! For starters? Pretzel bites, and spinach and artichoke dip. In both cases, the portions were large, and the quality was high, so we were all happy campers. Wanting to sample something unique to the D&B menu for my entree, I had the Philly Steak Burger... pretty self-explanatory, but it was a cheeseburger with steak, onions, mushrooms and peppers on top. MMM!

Oh, and that thing in the top right photo? A skinny long island. I dare those of your 21+ to not find something delicious on the drink menu. Dare you.

GAMES. Fine, I'm competitive. By the time we got our game cards and left the booth, the tension between the two couples in attendance was palpable. It was going to be a quiet car ride home, that's for sure.

Walking into Dave's Arcade made everyone feel like a little kid again. You want to play. You want to win. You want to buy something ridiculous with your tickets. As an adult, it also brings a seriously competitive spirit, aided by the bar in the middle, but it's all in good fun! Right PG???

Anyway, the arcade boasts an enormous assortment of games, from staples such as Pac Man, to newer gems like Fruit Ninja. While we mostly stuck to our classic favorites (basketball, skeeball, and racing), I'd be lying if I didn't say we were absolutely drawn in to the massive Connect Four board, or the trivia game. At the end of the day it doesn't matter who wins or loses... because I just say I win everything either way!

Overall, a great, great afternoon! The staff was super friendly, and clearly had that place figured out, from the dining room, to crowd control, they were on it! The food was delicious, the drinks were even more delicious, and the variety of games ensured that I worked off my massive lunch in no time (seriously, sweating).

Thanks to D&B for a great day. Now go check it out!!
But this week's version of That Just Happened definitely brought a little extra red to my cheeks.

When I have single friends, I looove to try and set them up. No, I'm not obnoxious about it, but if I find a great guy, I'll definitely do my best (and then let them take it from there).

Cut to Tuesday.

I ventured out to dinner with a good girlfriend of mine to hear about her recent adventures in a far away land (from me) known as The World of Single Girls. Geared up to hear her latest gossip, I instead found myself in a very different situation in which she vented to me about being lonely, worries over never being able to find anyone, and so on. De-pressing.

In an effort to cheer her up (and make her laugh a little), I start going on and on about this great guy I know, how they'd be perfect together, and sharing some uhhh less than flattering details about one night during which he was absolutely slammed. We were laughing, she seemed interested, and the night took a turn for the better.

Until I hear some poorly held-in laughs coming from the table behind me. The kind of laugh where you are clearly laughing at someone or something in particular, but do not want to be heard. I looked around, and no one had fallen, no one was wearing anything they shouldn't be, and nothing embarrassing had happened during the basketball game that was being aired. Hmm.

I was confused until I stood up to visit the ladies room and realized that two of his friends were at the table behind me. The same friends who had been out was us during his infamous romp that I had just shared in great detail, and who had just heard me go on and on about their friend for, oh, about a half hour.

All they said - "Hey, she does look like his type." Cue laughter. Cue embarrassment.

Oh well, maybe one day at their wedding we can all look back on this and laugh!
Huge. {Part 2}I know, I know. I promised pictures ASAP in yesterday's post. But guess what? After ironing for about an hour, finishing organizing, and starting to pack, ASAP is right about... now! Sorry, sorry.

So without further ado...

... After!

Quilt and shams: Crate & Barrel
Yellow and Ampersand Throw Pillows: Crate & Barrel
White and Yellow/White Pattern Throw Pillows: Target
Grey Euro Shams and Matching Bed Sheet: IKEA
White Down Comforter: Mine!

While making the bed, I wondered aloud to myself if this will really make a huge difference in the room. I mean, it is what it is, right? Wrong. The deep, warm tones absolutely cozied-up the room, and it feels much more "full" than it did before. I'm mildly obsessed with the addition of the grey, and I was lucky enough to find sheets and shams in a tone that went well with my existing carpet. The reds and yellows also look about 1000x better against the black furniture than the light pastels did.

Long story short - this was long-overdue, and a huge success!

Full disclosure - the pictures of the closet will have to wait. After all of my prepping (not of the doomsday variety, though that show is hilarious) I was absolutely exhausted, so I plopped down on the couch to catch my favorites - Ben and Kate, New Girl and Mindy Project.

Thoughts on last night's episodes:
- Ben and Kate: No new episode?! I'm calling you out, Fox...
- New Girl: Funnier than usual. Glad that Sam is back, but if CeeCee and Schmidt don't get back together I'm going to freak out. Seriously.
- Mindy Project: NOOOOO! Hearts broke across America last night - I actually really enjoyed Josh and Mindy's chemistry, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't love the mini Office reunion.

And that was my night! Friends often ask if I'll miss the peace of coming home to an empty, quiet apartment every night, able to do as I please... and never once have I said yes.

Huge. No, the world isn't ending. And no, I didn't just spot (and subsequently start dating) Channing Tatum while he films his movie here in The Pitts.

But it's still a big day.

It's bedroom renovation day! I actually took my own advice that I offered up in Man Up, and, after doing some serious Cyber Monday shopping, I have a complete new look for the bedroom. After tearing into the box last night I am absolutely in love with every single item I purchased, and I am so excited to make the switch tonight! Though I'm not looking forward to ironing everything... I'm a wrinkle freak, leave me alone.

Of course, the bedroom renovation would not be complete without the wrapping-up of my massive closet clean out, which I actually managed to finish last night while watching Glee and Monday Night Football (I'm a complicated lady) - obviously I took an enormous deep breath after completing that bad boy. Funny story: I actually woke up facing my closet, and didn't know where I was for a second. I did THAT well.

Well, you can be the judge of that.

There are definitely still things I need to do, such as find new things for the walls, but I figure if it is going to really be a representation of my roommate and I, we should probably work on those things together!

Aren't I thoughtful? (And humble..)

Want pictures? Stay tuned! I'll be posting them later tonight.

Once I'm done ironing. Sigh.

Talk to you in a few hours!
The season to spend six and a half hours plowing through crowds at the mall in order to ensure that all of your Christmas shopping is done in time. Come on.. that can't just be me!

Before I dive into Christmas Shopping Extravaganza 2012, I wanted to provide a quick update on my post about the Ugly Christmas Sweater Party I attended Friday night. What did I end up going with?? Drum roll please....

Christmas Gift Bags!

That's right, ladies and gentlemen, we brought it back. Easy to create, hilarious to wear, but not in the least bit sturdy (see picture #4). How do you make these delightful costumes? Easy, easy.

1. Cut out the bottom of a large gift bag, and remove the handles.
2. Slip the bag on and measure both for strap and bag length.
3. Create straps using the holes created by the original handles. I recommend securing with tape!
4. Stick a big bow on the front!

And you're all set! Now, you are wearing things that rip easily, so please keep this in mind when plotting what to wear underneath. I went with a black turtleneck and leggings, just to be on the safe side!

Ok, now for the Christmas Shopping Extravanganza. Let me preface this by saying that I, jokingly, predicted that it would take me six (count 'em, six) hours to complete everything on my list. In reality I was thinking three, knowing that my Uggs and holiday spirit would not be able to survive the mall for that long.

Six and a half hours later, I was on the couch surrounded by shopping bags and rubbing my feet. Why oh why oh why??? Simple really: who is able to accomplish all of their holiday shopping in one store? If you can, you may leave now (but first email me about how you managed this feat). Sure, I could go to a department store and find something for everyone, but I refuse to let my own laziness get in the way of the happiness of my loved ones at Christmas time (awww).

Not helping? My nasty little habit of not being able to stick to the list I so carefully prepared before venturing out. But I can't help it, sometimes I'm moved to shop! Laughing? You're about to feel awful about that...

#ToysforTots

Every time I walk past Build-a-Bear, I never seriously consider stopping in. Who would I build a bear for? I have things to do, places to go, so I move on. But when I saw two Marines standing in front of an almost-full box of bears and stuffed animals outside of the Ross Park Mall location, I was literally moved to shop. Hence, the cute little guy above was born, and quickly handed over to be given to a child this Christmas. The actual story is much longer, and more filled with tears because of two adorable kids donating bears in front of me, but I'll save that part for another day. I hope he finds a wonderful home!

But I wasn't done yet. My impulse shopping got the best of me again at Walmart where, while picking up a few cleaning supplies for the apartment, I noticed a rather empty-looking box for Toys for Tots once again. Naturally, I headed straight to the toys section and picked out an adorable Barbie and a pair of Playskool cars to contribute.

Why all of the random giving? I honestly couldn't help it. As I wandered store to store, I spent plenty of money on the people in my life (and even a little bit on myself). Usually, I just want to get in and out as quickly as possible. The parking lots are disastrous, no one seems to be in the holiday spirit, and everyone is looking out for themselves as they plow down the halls. But seeing all of the people making gifts to donate at Build-a-Bear really snapped me out of my funk. Why not spend a few dollars to do some good? Why not take some time to better a child's Christmas? My BaB and Walmart adventures combined took under 30 minutes, but I truly believe that it made a difference.

And I still feel wonderful :)

How are you do-good'ing this holiday season?

I can't believe it has already been eight months since I moved to The Pitts. It has been an incredible journey so far, and I am looking forward to starting the next chapter here in the next week. Where has the time gone??

While I have devoted this blog to blurbs and anecdotes about my personal growth while living in Pittsburgh, every once in awhile I really have to "Pitts-it-up" (spice it up, but Pittsburgh style). I mean, if I didn't write about Pittsburgh and my blog was titled "The Pitts", I'm pretty sure the entire city would show up outside of my apartment building wielding torches and pitchforks, calling me out for a brawl in Market Square.

If you couldn't tell before - I can be a wee bit dramatic, but only when humor can be found in my ranting (for the most part).

So I'm dedicating today to the lovely city of Pittsburgh. As with any city, you can spend hours pouring over travel guides, websites and tips from friends to get a sense for the area, but until you go out and experience for yourself, you're just accepting someone else's interpretation as fact. Lame. Super lame.

Here are seven of my fun facts about The Pitts that i have discovered thus far...

1. "Stillers"are, in fact, not individuals who work in a distillery, or who stand still all day. It's a Pittsburgher's way of staying "Steelers". Same goes for "buggy". No, not the cute little English baby carriage that came to my mind, rather another word for "grocery cart". Madness.

2. I heart Charlie Batch. There is something so noble about accepting your role as a back-up, and then truly reveling in your opportunity to step into the spotlight. I also loved his man-tears when he defeated the Ravens.

3. Robinson Town Centre has everything. End of story.

4. Traffic in Pittsburgh fluctuates dramatically in ten-minute windows. If I leave ten minutes early for work, the roads are empty and I cruise on through. If I leave ten minutes late, my commute is extended by about 30 minutes on average. In this instance, procrastination does not pay.

5. Pittsburgh is about five hours from several key destinations for me - Five hours from PG (for now), five hours from the newly-transported LS, five hours from my grandma's. Not too shabby.

6. Pittsburgh. Loves. Beer. It seems like every new restaurant I try out has an extensive list of craft beers that I can barely pronounce, let alone know what they are.

and #7 (which is more of a plea than a fun fact)...

7. The Ft. Pitt Tunnel desperately needs to be expanded to three lanes in either direction. I know it is virtually impossible, but please drive through it and tell me you feel differently.

So there you have it - a small sampling of the things I have learned about the great city of Pittsburgh since my arrival a whopping 8 months ago. I'm still adjusting, but I am appreciating my new surroundings more and more every day.

Share a fun fact about where you live!

And no, I am not referring to the startling statistic that the average American gains 15 pounds* over the Holidays. For shame!

*100% myth, people! The average person gains 1-2 pounds according to this article by CNN. But still.

No, no, I am referring to Ugly Christmas Sweater Parties. My absolute favorite. Why, you ask? Because this is legitimately the ONE theme party in existence (that I would actually attend, I mean), where it is 100% normal to where jeans, boots, and a massively over-sized, heinous sweater. Does it get more comfortable than that? I think not.

Having just received an invite to the first UCSP (ok, I abbrev'd) of the season, I've got ugly on the brain, and am obviously feeling the time crunch here. Where, oh where can I turn for inspiration?

Oh - probably pictures from the last five years of ugly sweater parties that I have attended.

Cue inspiration!
Sorry, PG, had too. Aren't we just adorable?? Yikes.

So that is my foundation for this Friday's outfit-planning. Mind you, this is not a complete picture of all of my Holiday-partying. I couldn't dig up a picture of the party my friends and I wore over-sized Christmas gift bags and leggings to, but it was 100% adorable, and I am not above repeating it this year!

Per usual, ideas are appreciated. I suggest that you help me out, or else I might end up wearing this...
All. Weekend. My fondest memories of that song date back to the middle of my 4th grade year when my family and I uprooted from my hometown in Massachusetts, and took up residence outside of Scottsdale, AZ. Talk about a change. This song was playing on the radio as we pulled away from my childhood home, and I obnoxiously sang along and bounced around while my mom sobbed. And she'll never let me forget it.
While I love my baby blues and greens and pristine white furniture (kind of), it's time to move on. With the addition of a male to the abode in mere weeks, my apartment seriously needs to man up.

If you're thinking of beer pong tables, beer posters and a keg in the corner... well, to be honest, that's what I was thinking too. Panic attack ensued. Not my beautiful apartment! And then I woke up and realized I wasn't moving a fraternity into my one-bedroom. Thankfully.

No, redecorating wouldn't be a disaster - it would be an opportunity to change things up and maybe expand my comfort zone a bit!

And then I got excited. And then I shopped. Thanks for nothing Cyber Monday - love, Sarah's Wallet. I still have some things to do that we're going to do together to make sure that he's adequately represented in the space, but I definitely got a great jump-start.

My Manning-Up To-Dos:

1. Bedroom: The black furniture theme in my room was a good foundation for the revamp, especially given how it contrasts with the new colors I was adding. My old color scheme was baby blue, green and white, but now...

A rich garnet quilt to layer on top of my white duvet cover to create contrast.

Boom! Mustard! Love the combination with the garnet quilt, and will go great with my gray carpet and Euro shams.

Balances out the bright colors, and matches well with the dark furniture. Plus, it's just the best pillow I've ever seen.

2. Closet: Ok, cue the tears. Everyone... I need to clean out my closet. And I mean REALLY clean it out. I'm beside myself. Not like "Hey I'm going to give some stuff away today" cleaning out, like "I need to make room for someone else" cleaning out. What?! But I welcome the challenge. If any co-habitors have any suggestions for me on how to best accomplish this (other than get a place with bigger closets), I'd be eternally grateful!

3. Kitchen: HA, it is what it is. Moving on.

4. Living Room: Now this re-do required no twisting of the arm whatsoever. I've been dying to do it for awhile, and saving up just incase an occasion arose that would really push me over the edge. And here it is! Right now I have a white couch with light brown pillows and throws. Now I'm thinking...

Once the clock hit 8:00 (actually 7:50 because the crazy shoppers were apparently cheaters as well), that was it, the big moment - my Christmas 2k12 shopping had officially begun.

Holiday shopping always makes me reflect on a better, simpler time, when I spent hours writing down everything I ever wanted into a neat list that I would mail to Santa, and my parents would make me sign some version of "Sarah" on the tags of the gifts they had purchased on my behalf. End scene.

Today - not so simple. Not only do I have to buy my own gifts, but everyone around me is apparently "so over" being honest about what they want, leaving the ball completely in my court. I wish people had to register for Christmas presents, so you could pick something you knew they wanted that fits into your price range and be done with it. Unless you're the person that registers for nothing less than $500, in which case you would not be getting a gift from me regardless. Sorry.

I swear, everyone, I'm NOT a Scrooge. Ask anyone - I love gift-giving! While I love to shop for myself, I get infinitely more enjoyment out of buying for others, and seeing their smiles (fake or real, I don't judge) when they open their gifts. It's the "I don't know what I want but I expect you to know what I want and buy it for me"-ness of the holidays that can be a bit of a bummer. Help me help you.

Thus I've created...

SJ's Five Helpful Hints for Unhelpful Gift Recipients:
Tips for the indecisive on how to get what you want for Christmas

1. Be Honest - Ok, don't run around asking your fresh-out-of-college sibling for a Tiffany's necklace, but be honest about what you want. If you want a scarf, as for a scarf, and let the gift-giver determine whether it's TJ Maxx or Burberry. If you want it to be a certain color, then fess up already! You won't get what you want by being coy.

2. Plan Ahead - Why is it surprising that a million people want to know what you want for Christmas towards the end of November every year?? You know the question is coming, so pull together a few gift ideas at various budget levels ahead of time. That way you won't accidentally say "socks" when someone asks you what you want at Thanksgiving dinner.

3. Gift Cards are OK - My favorite gifts are ones that let me do something I love with the ones I love. Thus, a gift card to my favorite restaurant is always a great option. Now I don't recommend giving gift cards to everyone and calling it a day - maybe pair it with a photo or a DIY gift to add a personal touch.

4. "Surprise Me"? You got it. - If there is one gift-giving adage I would do away with, it would be "suprise me". You want a surprise? Congrats, you are now the recipient of the foam Rudolph I grabbed in my caffeine-fueled Black Friday shopping blackout. Surprise! But seriously. If this is your way of hinting that you want something extra thoughtful or extravagant, there are much better ways than that.

5. DIY - Every year as a child I found myself in the sweatshop they called Art Class cranking out Christmas gifts like an elf on steroids for every member of my family. Shopping over. Back then, it was adorable when I handed over a lopsided clay pot that I had hand-crafted - now, not so much. So for those who would like something "made with love" this holiday... well, just be prepared for whatever you might receive.

You're welcome!

So, to all you gift-receivers out there, all humor aside, give us gift-givers a hand this Holiday season! It doesn't mean that we'll put any less thought into your gift, it will simply ensure that whatever we land on will be that much closer to what you actually want!

Oh, but gentlemen shopping for significant others - you're on your own. These rules do not apply to your girlfriends, fiancees or wives. Best of luck!
It's still near enough to Thanksgiving to utilize a good Turkey Day pun. Per usual, a should-be-easy travel schedule turned into a 2:30 am nightmare, but c'est la vie! I had a wonderful weekend with my family, but am glad to be back in Pittsburgh. So much to do, so little time! Birthday celebrations, and graduations, and Christmas preparation, oh my!

Given that my mind is in a million places right now, accurately capturing my fabulous weekend in words just doesn't seem plausible. I would inevitably leave something (or someone... my little brother) out, and chaos would ensue. Following up on my account of Thanksgiving through the eyes of Twitter, I figured I would, once again, paint a picture of my various activities for the weekend without inanely babbling on - this time via a collection of seriously random photos!
I apologize for my absence, but I made a promise to myself that I would dedicate myself completely to my family during Thanksgiving (and, of course, Black Friday), so I had to take a slight blogging hiatus.
While I will get to all of the things I am thankful for tomorrow, I'd like to dedicate today's post to something equally serious and heartfelt - the Annual Family Thanksgiving Touch Football Game.

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, it's that time of year again. Time to line up against your (least) favorite relative and have at it for as long as those Bloody Marys in your stomach will allow. At least that's how I play - CJ, I'm looking at you.

Last year, in preparation for the big game, Dad sent us a Wall Street Journal article that hilariously depicted the 32 golden rules that should all players should adhere to during the annual family game. And, I was delighted to find out that they had decided to go round 2 in preparation for Thanksgiving this year.

I present to you (on behalf of Jason Gay)...

29 More Rules for Thanksgiving Touch Football

1. The family touch football game is going to be your only athletic activity of Thanksgiving Day. Let's be real. No matter how many times you tell everyone you are going for a run—you are not going for a run. You're not fooling anybody.

2. There's always a person in the family who suggests "mixing it up this Thanksgiving" and playing soccer or hide-and-seek or taking a family hike at the nature preserve. No. Fail. You're playing touch football. Nobody wants to go hiking at the nature preserve. Boring.

3. If you wear a blazer and tie during the Thanksgiving game, it is a rule that you're going to be the first person knocked down into the mud and everybody will laugh. Related: Why are you wearing a blazer and tie to Thanksgiving?

4. It's not really a family touch football game unless at least three family members have no idea which team they are playing on.

5. There's always a moment during the Thanksgiving touch football game when someone finds out what a bad, bad boy Peanut Butter, the family golden retriever, has been in the backyard. Bad Peanut Butter!

6. There are no steroids allowed in Thanksgiving touch football. But your Uncle Dave just tested positive for vodka and doughnuts.

7. Mom wants to play quarterback, Mom gets to play quarterback.

8. Must emphasize this again: Use a leather football. Foam footballs are for preschools and dogs.

9. Nobody in the family can throw a "perfect" spiral. Nobody. Your cousin who thinks he can throw a "perfect" spiral? That would be the ugliest pass Tom Brady ever threw.

10. If you are playing your Thanksgiving touch football on the beach in 80-degree weather, congratulations on your fine luck. Also: Everyone hates you.

11. If a nice man shows up at the front door wearing a No. 15 jersey and begging to play, let him. That's Tim Tebow, and he just wants somebody to let him take a few snaps. But running plays only. No passes. He'll understand.

12. There's always someone who uses the touch football game as an excuse to sneak off and eat ice cream and pie in the kitchen at 10:30 a.m.

13. Remember, there is no instant replay in family touch football. Like all family business, on-field arguments are settled by sulking and passive aggression.

14. If you are a Kennedy, yes: Taylor Swift is showing up to the family touch football game in Hyannis Port this year, and she's bringing homemade cupcakes, mix tapes and papier-mâché sculptures of everyone. It's going to be super awkward.

15. During your game somebody will catch a touchdown pass with one hand while holding a beer in the other. Please know that somewhere in New England, an injured Rob Gronkowski is doing the exact same thing.

16. You do not need fancy end-zone markers in touch football. You only need four items to mark end zones: a winter hat, a flower pot, a 12-pack of beer and your Aunt Ginny.

17. If you're new to a family, hold back a little. A first Thanksgiving with potential future in-laws is not the day for a 400-yard, nine-TD, 15-sack performance. You will wind up eating turkey outside on the porch.

18. It's all fun and games until the first relative over 80 hits the deck. But Grandma's fine! Shake it off, Grandma!

19. Losers Walk! "Losers Walk" is when you make the defeated defensive team walk back to the other end of the field after they get scored upon. Where I grew up, it was called "Suckers Walk." You could also call it the "Amble of Humiliation," the "Trudge of Shame," the "Dawdle of Ignominy." Of course, you might get "Socked in the Eye."

20. Everybody loves playing football with cute little kids but let's face it: Nobody passes to cute little kids on third-and-long. Come on. Huge play!
